NEWSWEEK SLAPS A RAINBOW HALO ON OBAMA’S HEAD AND DECLARES HE’S “THE FIRST GAY PRESIDENT”
Ummm, is it just me or does this rub you..the wrong, no, I’ll say a weird way. We all know Newsweek is no stranger to controversial covers and this one is no different. What’s interesting enough is that the writer of the article is openly gay. The cover seems to be an attention grabber, but the actual article is not at all offensive (in my opinion). Author, Andrew Sullivan practically salutes Obama’s decision to support gay marriage, and wants you to know it. Sullivan says, “Like many others, I braced myself for disappointment, and yet when I watched the interview, the tears came flooding down. The moment reminded me of my own wedding day. I had figured it out in my head, but not my heart. And I was utterly unprepared for how psychologically transformative the moment would be. To have the president of the United States affirm my humanity — and the humanity of all gay Americans — was, unexpectedly, a watershed.”
So all in all it seems like the cover is not meant to be disrespectful, but shell shocking, and it worked. What do you think about Obama being called “The First Gay President” to get readers?
